Emerald Ash Borer Treatment Options

The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) was first discovered in the US in Detroit Michigan in 2002. Since then the Emerald Ash Borer has been feeding on Ash Trees and causing destruction throughout forests and rural areas and not its showing up in Utah.

There are currently four known treatment options to help save ash trees. The earlier you apply the treatment the better change your ash tree has against the Emerald Ash Borer.

Find a Tree Care Professional

Trunk Injection

  • How is it applied: By a preferred licensed pesticide operator
  • What is the process: A preferred licensed pesticide operator inject the insecticide into the bark
  • How Often: Every two years for most ash trees, but may be every year
  • How Effective: This has been shown to be 90% effective at controlling Emerald Ash Borers

Remove & Replace

  • How is it applied: Licences tree care professionals
  • What is the process: We recommend that you have a preferred licensed professional remove the infected tree. You should also contact your local utility providers to make sure you won’t damage anything underground when removing a tree
  • How Often: Just one time
  • How Effective: 100%. By removing the infected tree and disposing of it correctly you remove the spread of EAB

Soil Drench

  • How is it applied: By a licensed pesticide operator or property owner
  • What is the process: This may vary, but generally the liquid or granules are applied to the soil around the tree allowing the soil drench to take hold of the roots
  • How Often: This is based on the ash tree size, but can be often as once per year
  • How Effective: Unknown. Some trials show this is very effective where some other trials showed poor results

Bark Spray

  • How is it applied: By a licensed pesticide operator
  • What is the process: The pesticide is sprayed on the bottom of the ash tree and penetrates the bark and then is transported throughout the tree
  • How Often: Once per year
  • How Effective: Unknown. The results of bark sprays are similar to that of the soil drenches
